Comic Book Club August Meetings: Transmetropolitan vols 1+2

For August we will begin our latest long read with Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson’s sci-fi classic Transmetropolitan (For those keeping track we’ve now read most of the Vertigo classics; Saga of the Swamp Thing, HellblazerPreacher, The Invisibles, Sandman, and Y The Last Man), we’ll begin with volume 1 on August 5, volume 2 on August 26, and will read two volumes a month in the following months until we conclude in December.  For our main title in September we will be reading Frank Miller and Dave Gibbons’ sci-fi saga of Martha Washington, this meeting will also be our Comic Book Club’s fourth anniversary, so we’ll probably be doing something special that night as well.

Our meetings begin at 6 PM, and per usual we recommend attendees BYOB (be it beer, beverage, or BBQ).  Listed below are our next two months of readings, and a photo and summary of August’s titles:

Sunday, August 5: Transmetropolitan vol 1

Sunday, August 26: Transmetropolitan vol 2

Sunday, September 9: The Life & Times of Martha Washington in the 21st Century

Sunday, September 23: Transmetropolitan vols 3 and 4

After years of self imposed exile from a civilization rife with degradation and indecency, cynical journalist Spider Jerusalem is forced to return to a job he hates and a city he loathes. Working as an investigative reporter for the newspaper The Word, Spider attacks the injustices of his surreal 23rd century surroundings.  In this first volume, Spider ventures into the dangerous Angels 8 district, home of the Transients – humans who have decided to become aliens through cosmetic surgery. But Spider’s interview with the Transients’ leader gets him a scoop he didn’t bargain for. And don’t miss Spider’s first confrontation with the President of the United States . . . in a men’s room.
