Comic Book Club June Meeting: Hellboy Omnibus Seed of Destruction

As summer finally arrives with June, it’s fitting that the Ash Ave Comic Book Club plumb the depths of darkness and horror with a character accustomed to the heat, with Mike Mignola’s classic comic creation Hellboy.   This month we will be reading and discussing Mike Mignola’s Eisner Award winning Dark Horse in the new chronologically ordered omnibus format, following that in July is Emil Ferris’ critically acclaimed graphic novel My Favorite Thing is Monsters, and in August we’ll kick off our next ongoing read with Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson’s Transmetropolitan.

Our meetings begin at 6 PM, and per usual we recommend attendees BYOB (be it beer, beverage, or BBQ).  Listed below are our next two months of readings, and a photo and summary of June’s title:

Sunday, June 3: Hellboy Omnibus: Seed of Destruction

Sunday, July 8: My Favorite Thing is Monsters

The Hellboy saga begins-with over 300 pages drawn by Mignola! For the first time, Hellboy’s complete story is presented in chronological order for the ultimate reading experience.
The story jumps from Hellboy’s mysterious World War II origin to his 1994 confrontation with the man who summoned him to earth, and the earliest signs of the plague of frogs. Avoiding his supposed fate as the herald of the end of the world, Hellboy continues with the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, fighting alongside Abe Sapien, Liz Sherman, and drafting Roger Homunculus into his own ill-fated service with the B.P.R.D.
This 368-page volume covers Hellboy’s adventures published from 1994 to 1997, reprinting Seed of DestructionWake the Devil, and “Wolves of St August,” “The Chained Coffin,” and “Almost Colossus,” from The Chained Coffin and The Right Hand of Doom.
