Comic Book Club July Meeting: My Favorite Thing is Monsters

Our July title is a big one, and one of the most critically acclaimed, lauded, and awarded comic works in recent memory. For our Sunday, July 8 Comic Book Club we will be discussing Emil Ferris’ My Favorite Thing is Monsters, and we will begin our next ongoing comic book club in August with Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson’s sci-fi classic Transmetropolitan.

Our meetings begin at 6 PM, and per usual we recommend attendees BYOB (be it beer, beverage, or BBQ).  Listed below are our next two months of readings, and a photo and summary of July’s title:

Sunday, July 8:
My Favorite Thing is Monsters

Sunday, August 5: Transmetropolitan vol 1

Sunday, August 19: Transmetropolitan vol 2

My Favorite Thing Is Monsters is a murder mystery, a family drama, a sweeping historical epic, and a psychological thriller about monsters, real and imagined. Set against the political backdrop of late ’60s Chicago, Karen Reyes tries to solve the murder of her enigmatic upstairs neighbor. Rendered in a kaleidoscopically visual style, Emil Ferris’ draftsmanship echoes the drawing of Otto Dix, George Grosz, and Robert Crumb. This is a revelatory work of striking originality and will undoubtedly be greeted as the debut graphic novel of the year.
