Ash Ave Comics Book Club reading MIND MGMT vol 1 for January meeting

Our January meeting is just around the corner, this time we’ll be reading MIND MGMT  vol 1, from writer/artist Matt Kindt, and published in 2012 by Dark Horse Comics.

The fourth meeting of the Ash Avenue Comic Book Club was held on the first Sunday of December, and we had our longest meeting yet.  We discussed Identity Crisis, and the meeting covered a laundry list of topics.  Among the topics covered were the dynamics of DC’s shared universe, what defines the DCU’s heroes and villains, the fantastic fight with Deathstroke, the use of sexual violence as a red herring, the exclusion of Superman-Batman-Wonder Woman in the story as they remained DC’s untouchable “divine trinity”, and why we were divided as a group on what we liked/hated about this title.  Per usual, at the end of the meeting, a reader’s name was chosen at random from a hat, and Ryan’s name was pulled.  Ryan chose MIND MGMT vol 1 for our January 4th discussion.  Copies are currently in stock at the shop, and are all Club titles are available for 20% off of the listed price.

In addition to choosing January’s title, we decided to choose the book for the next month as well.  Matt’s name was picked and he chose The Wake by Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy for our Sunday, February 1st meetup.  We also discussed adding a second book club, everyone present was enthusiastic about a second mid-month meeting that would read a series of books, rather than the first volume, or a standalone title as we do for our group that meets the first of the month.  So, we’ve decided to read Grant Morrison’s epic series The Invisibles, beginning with volume 1 for the Sunday, February 15 meeting, and we’ll be reading volume 2 in March.  We discussed making the second group more research oriented, with other texts and discussion around the implications of the title outside of comics, as well as looking at influences on the series.

If you’d like to join come on into the shop and sign up. The Club meets at the shop on the first Sunday of the month to discuss a previously selected graphic novel, and club members will also choose the next month’s reading after finishing the discussion.  Our fourth meet up is scheduled for 6 PM on Sunday, January 4th.  Read the summary below for more information on MIND MGMT Vol 1.
